Rubens was the Quentin Tarantino of his day, making Flanders one of the world’s foremost regions for painting. The Flemish master-painter developed his own personal style, crafting scenes that exuded lust and were marked by violence, as well as compassion and elegance.

The exhibition explores the major themes developed throughout the career of a painter who had the greatest impact on the history of the 20th century: art reflecting on art and on the relationship between the real and the super-real* and between nature and culture, the artist’s heartfelt involvement in the tragedy of unfolding history, the emergence of the monster with a human face, and the metaphor of erotic desire as a primary source of inspiration for the artist’s creativity and world vision.The exhibition also allows visitors to explore Picasso’s multi-faceted personality, the almost symbiotic bond that existed between his art and his life, between the work that he created and the time of his life in which he created it, while History with a capital “H” frequently made powerful inroads both into his pictures and into his life.

icasso and Spanish Modernity comprises some ninety works by Picasso and other artists, ranging from painting to sculpture, drawing, engraving and even a film by José Val del Omar, thanks to the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi’s synergistic cooperation with the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. The works of art on display include such celebrated masterpieces as Woman’s Head
(1910), Portrait of Dora Maar(1939) and The Painter and the Model (1963) by Picasso, Siurana, the Path(1917) and Figure and Bird in the Night (1945) by Miró and Dalí’s Arlequin (1927), along with Picasso’s drawings, engravings and preparatory paintings for his hugemasterpiece Guernica (1937), none of which have been displayed outside Spain in such vast numbers before now.

From 12 September 2014 to 11 January 2015 – Albertina

With his imaginative pictorial motifs, Joan Miró is one of the most popular artists of the 20th century. The Albertina is dedicating a solo exhibition to the Catalonian artist containing around 100 paintings, drawings and objects, which strives to emphasise the poetic quality of the famous Surrealist.

iró’s painting is characterised by a sense of lightness and spontaneity. He looks upon the world with a carefree, almost childish fascination for all things. His unmistakable pictorial language is as magical as it is universal. Moons, stars and comets, eyes and insects, birds and women populate his paintings and are among the most recognisable elements of his art. Miró’s works provide insight into his poetic perception and interpretation of the original, of that which is actually essential in things, the world and the universe.

Niki de Saint Phalle (1930 – 2002) is one of the most renowned artists from the mid-twentieth century. Throughout her prolific career, Saint Phalle created a complex body of work in various media which was deeply embedded with socio-political issues. With themes ranging from joyful to profound to intellectual, the paradoxal nature of her work has yet to be fully explored. She was one of the first women to receive international acclaim and recognition during her lifetime, as well as successfully create a public persona. Similar to Warhol, Saint Phalle was able to use the media to skillfully guide the reception of her work

W
ithout any formal art training, Niki de Saint Phalle took her inspiration from Gaudi, Dubuffet and Pollock to invent, in the late 1950s, a singular world independent of any trend or art movement. Her entire career is sublimated by great themes and myths, which later articulated her entire oeuvre. The joyous, colourful side of her work is well known but its violence, commitment and radical stands have been forgotten. And this is equally true of her audacious performances, the political and feminist content of her work and her ambitious public sculptures.

his retrospective, the first major exhibition devoted to Niki de Saint Phalle in twenty years, presents a multifaceted artist, at once a painter, assembly artist, sculptor, printmaker, performer and experimental filmmaker, and takes a profoundly new look at her work. Over 200 works and archives, many unpublished, are set out in 2,000 square metres, organised by chronology and theme, and punctuated by screens showing the artist talking about her work. Models of architectural projects and a sculpture-fountain (Snake’s Tree) outside the Grand Palais will give visitors an idea of the scope and diversity of her public work

In the Time of Water continues Siobhan McClure’s epic narrative about bands of children that have been left to negotiate the post-apocalyptic urban wasteland “Mirror City.” Inspired by the stillness of Vermeer and the silhouetted German Romantic landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich, McClure has used heightened one-point perspective and delicately rendered figures to engage the viewer with the strangeness of destruction and the possibility inherent within reorder. In addition to fueling such an elaborately cohesive body of work, the conflicts faced by these hierarchical tribes of children provide a fantasy space for the artist to negotiate the existent challenges of today’s tumultuous urban centers. The show includes fifteen watercolor and gouache works on paper, and six medium to large-scale oil paintings on canvas that resume the story of her 2010 exhibition, The Tale of Pearl, at Richard Heller Gallery.

ach work from In the Time of Water functions as a fragmented view of McClure’s larger narrative which is ultimately connected by her own elaborate legend of reoccurring motifs. Though complex, the legend is meant as more of an aid than as a pre-requisite to viewing the works; a window into McClure’s artistic process. As Bill Callahan sings in From the Rivers to the Ocean, “Have faith in wordless knowledge. Well, I could tell you about the river or we could just get in.”
Born in 1955 in Margate, England, Siobhan McClure has lived and worked in the Los Angeles area for over 20 years. Her previous solo exhibitions include The Tale of Pearl at Richard Heller Gallery (2010), The Garden at Lara Schlesinger Gallery (2008), and two shows with Jan Baum Gallery (2003, 2001). McClure’s work has also been included in numerous group shows including Prep School at the Torrance Art Museum earlier this year, Artists’ Tales at the Irvine Fine Art Center in 2012, among others at Andi Campognone Projects in Pomona, CA, Angel’s Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, and the Center for Contemporary Art in Sacramento.
