December 23  to  January, 2011 – State Museum of Modern Art of the Russian Academy of Arts, 10 Gogolevsky Blvd

The Moscow Museum of Modern Art presents the «Don’t Know Why» show by Galina Yudashkina. The exhibition is held within the «Debut» program, curated by the «Free Studios» School of Contemporary Art. This program, which has been around for 5 years, discovers new names in art by allowing young talented artists to show their works for the first time in the museum space.

Galina mainly works with fashion photography: she has inherited from her father understanding of fashion as an art form. Attending shows, observing the creation of a collection, Galina forms her own artistic vision of the fashion industry. Despite her young age, Galina Yudashkina has been recognized as a true professional, she has worked for the Russian Vogue, and Valentin Yudashkin Fashion House.

The art of this photo artist is not limited to one genre. The «Don’t Know Why» show features a number of photo series Galina has completed in the past few years. These works are characterized by style and genre diversity: one can see staged and costume photographs, backstage shots, as well as film photography — vintage photo cards, referencing to the aesthetics of old photography masters.

The title of the show — «Don’t Know Why» — speaks of the contradictory yet totally natural way the images so different in style and media fall together within one show. In many respects this is due the special composition arrangement of the display. The photographs are united by the central installation «Bus Stop», which imitates a real life suburban bus stop: a bright red bench against a blue metal sheet. There is a nude photograph hanging on the metal sheet — a naked girl standing at a bus stop. The installation quite literally materializes the subject of the photograph. By contrasting the vulnerable image of the model and the rough urban environment, the photographer introduces harsh urban motives into the otherwise intimate nude genre.

Photographs by Galina Yudashkina are characterized by play of contrasts, experiments with color; they break the limits of one genre. However there are less provocative images in the display too — for example, a series of photographs, inspired by the «Waterloo Bridge» film, which unfold in front of the viewer as a film reel. Whereas the «Russian Fields» series is reflective of the contemplation around the theme of motherland — the theme inherent in all Russian artists, and placing Russia in the artistic context.

Galina Yudashkina is famous among stars of Russian show business. Ksenia Sukhinova, Miss World 2008, and a famous young actor Ivan Nikolaev both enjoy working with her.

Galina Yudashkina studies Art History at the Lomonosov State University in Moscow. In 2009, she did an internship with Patrick Demarchelier, a famous American portrait photographer. In the summer of 2010, she took a film photography course at Parsons School of Design. In September 2010, Galina together with Julia Restoin-Roitfeld curated the photo shoot of a jeans collection at «NY Valentin Yudashkin».
